Cathedral and Alcázar of Seville
By visiting the Cathedral and the Alcazar, you will not only learn stories of poet kings and bastard princes who started a new dynasty, but you will also hear about kilos and kilos of silver brought from Bolivia, Mexico, or Arizona, or about black slaves sold on the steps of the world’s largest Gothic temple. You will also see where and how Charles V and Isabel of Portugal danced at their wedding party, learn the story of a crocodile sent by a sultan, hear about Protestants from all over Europe who lived in Seville, some burned by the Inquisition, and learn about the Spanish dollar and its relation to the American dollar, plus much more besides.
Besides..
Would you like to see two palaces in the same day, one of which is filled with Muslim and Jewish symbols but built by a Christian king; discover the place where the first world map was made, or the virgin to whom Christopher Columbus used to pray before his voyages; admire a crown with 11,960 gemstones; listen to one of only four hydraulic organs in the world; or climb a 12th-century tower that was a skyscraper when it was built..?
Do you want to know
why the cathedral is Gothic and not Mudejar, the latter style typical of these lands, in which three religions, three cultures that lived together in the city, collaborated? A city where Greek and Roman knowledge had been compiled into a 20-volume encyclopedia back in the 6th century, or where in the 13th century many Muslim and Jewish books were translated, all of which later made the Renaissance possible
Is there more?
Of course! Do you know that Christopher Columbus’s remains might be in the cathedral? (I’ll reveal them to you during the visit). This navigator lived in Seville for more than 10 years, just like A. Vespucci, or Cervantes, who began to write Don Quixote in prison. Would you like to see Allah represented in the tiles of the Alcazar or Jesus Christ in three dimensions on the floor of some of the cathedral chapels? Do you want to know why Muslims were pioneers of many things? Do you want to know what ́s hidden inside the largest organ in Europe? Would you like to see a maze in gardens measuring six and a half hectares in the heart of the city?
Would you..?
Don’t worry: although I am passionate about History, during the visits I also tell anecdotes, making them lively and interesting, and children always enjoy them; I make them see that History is like a great detective game: one clue leads to another. I promise the visit is not like a lesson but you ́ll learn from it.
